When Jesus was born, he was not born according to the world’s definitions of power and authority. He was born lowly and poor. Yet this is the power that eventually shook the world, greater than any worldly empire or nation. We, too, must embrace this poverty and lowliness if we are really to have an effect on this troubled world. This is the way of the Incarnation. It is the way of Jesus Christ. It is the real message of Christmas.

Christ is the only “reason for the season.” Beyond all the beautiful carols is Christ and Christ alone. Somewhere beyond the haunting purity of the boys’ choir is the sound of heaven that haunts every human heart. Beyond the ancient carols and chants is our desire for the radical faith and rootedness of the saints of old. Beyond the new song is the desire for the wind of the Spirit who constantly makes all things as fresh and new as the newborn King of Kings in Bethlehem.
