In March 2004, Janelle and her husband Jason were driving into the city (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) and talking about Jason's men’s prayer meeting the night before. As a way to put their faith in action, the men had resolved to try to defend and uphold the Pope’s name and the authority and dignity of his Papacy, in regards to the recent bad press he had received due to his failing health and scandals committed by those in the Church. Jason and Janelle were brainstorming about ways they could do that and as Janelle was reflecting on her meeting with the Holy Father in March 2002, she said, “Well the best way I know how to do that is to write a song about his life. I know how much of an impact he’s made in my life and I think if people only knew what an amazing life he’s led, they’d really respect and admire him too.” Jason said, “That’s a great idea!” So they got on the phone and called their team of songwriters at their ministry, Life-Vision Communications. Four different Pope songs were written, then combined, resulting in "Be Not Afraid (Open Wide Your Heart)."

When asked what they hope to accomplish with the release of this Tribute song, Janelle explains, “Our prayer for this song is that as people hear and reflect on the life of Pope John Paul II, they would be inspired to actively seek out new and creative ways to spread the Gospel and continue to strive to be that modern day Saint in society. Pope John Paul is, in my opinion, a walking saint, not because he’s a Pope, but because every day he wakes up and is enthusiastic about extending Christ’s kingdom around the world. He dreams big and because of that Christ has blessed his endeavors enormously and that’s why he’s been named one of the most influential people in the Twentieth Century."

"Our Lord doesn’t just call Popes to devote their whole lives to building up His Church and His kingdom, that’s an invitation he extends to each and every one us. Each of us has a very specific portion to contribute to that plan. So many people waste precious time in worldly pursuits, not really stopping to ask themselves, 'What is the part Christ is asking me to play in His grand plan for salvation?' They don’t realize that when they take the time to honestly ask our Lord and obey what he is asking of them, that’s when they will experience the fullness of joy, that inextinguishable hope and lasting peace each person seeks out in this life. In a nutshell our hope for this song is that it will offer hope, encourage each person’s pursuit of holiness and celebrate the beauty of Christ’s graces in the life of Pope John Paul II.
