Brothers Matt and Fr. Tim Devine,
CC have been writing, performing and recording music together for
15 years. From their early attempts at song writing, to the songs
on their latest CD, Not Ordinary, Matt & Tim’s songs are stories
about love, relationships and about their faith in God.
Matt and Tim grew up in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. And it was
during their teens, when they began to improve at playing
instruments that they began to fully realize their passion for
song writing and making music together.
The Devine brothers began to play in various bands and released
their first CD, Side By Side, in January 1995. After a few years
and moderate success, Matt and Tim felt something was missing from
their musical experience. Playing at university pubs and local
bars lacked meaning and they both longed for something more.
God Provides
Matt and Tim left their secular band to join Critical Mass, a
Catholic rock group that was introducing Contemporary Christian
Music to the Catholic youth. Matt and Tim continued to write
songs, but now their songs expressed their deepening faith and
relationship with God. Being a part of Critical Mass provided an
incredible opportunity to combine their love for writing and
recording songs with their love for Jesus.
Critical Mass released their first CD, Faith Looks Up, in 1997.
It features the Eucharistic song, "Body And Blood" which is now
being used in many parishes. After the unanticipated success of
Faith Looks Up, Critical Mass released their second CD,
Completely, in October, 2000. The CD was produced by Andrew
Horrocks (formerly of the band, "One Hundred Days") and won "Rock
Album of the Year" at the 2000 Canadian Gospel Music Association
Covenant Awards. The songs on these CDs present Catholic theology
in an effective and unique way. They expresses the struggles of
surrender and the feelings of joy one feels when they realize
God‘s love for them in a more intimate way. Critical Mass
performed at many conferences and festivals over the next two
years culminating with their performances at key events during
World Youth Day 2002 in Toronto.
After the reorganizing of Critical Mass, Matt and Tim continued
writing songs and decided to work with Andrew Horrocks again to
produce a new Devine CD. This collection of 12 new original
compositions is entitled, Not Ordinary. Released in January 2004,
the CD offers music styles ranging from praise to pop,
contemplative to high-energy rock. The songs encourage the
listener to be "Not Ordinary" by falling in love with Jesus and
letting Him "make you more." The song, "Symphony" is a reminder
that each of us is a beautiful symphony, created in love by God.
The pro-life lyrics to the rock-flavoured "Running with Eyes
Closed" offers a prayer of someone trying to help a friend who is
contemplating having an abortion. The CD also includes a Marian
song called "Queen of Peace" and the Eucharistic song, "Only Say
the Word."
In case you were wondering…
Tim studied to become a priest with the Companions of the Cross in
Ottawa and was ordained to the priesthood in November 2002. He is
currently Associate Pastor at St Thomas Aquinas parish in Halifax,
Nova Scotia. Matt is married and has one daughter and teaches in a
Catholic Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario.
Our Prayer
As you listen to their songs, Matt & Tim hope that the words and
melodies make you recognize the love that Jesus has for you and
that through the music, God’s name may be worshiped and glorified
forever!
